Bounded Islands

Stromness windows, 16th-27th November 2020

Exhibiting artists:

Louise Barrington, Amy Beeston, Boyd & Grogan (Susan Boyd, Kristel Grogan), Kerrianne Flett, Samantha Gray, Kristyn Grieve, Mal Grieve, Kelly Marwick, Beccy May, Frances Scott & Norna Sinclair.

Using Visit Scotland’s ‘Year of Coasts and Waters 2020’ as a springboard, the group chose ‘Islands as Bounded Places’ as the theme of their next exhibition. Originally this was to take place in Northlight gallery but like many galleries, Northlight was unable to open to visitors during lockdown.

Not wishing to lose momentum, and in order to provide a focus for its members during an uncertain time, Móti Collective opted instead to display their artworks in retail & residential premises along the main shopping street in Stromness. We had a great response from Stromness retailers who were eager to encourage people along the street after what had been a difficult year for businesses.

None of us knew just how relevant the idea of ‘islands as bounded places’ would become over the course of the year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Lockdown forced everyone to confront the realities of where they live, and how ‘bound’ they were by their situation and surroundings. Exhibiting artists explored the positives and negatives of our various experiences through their pieces and hopefully we brightened up the street and gave the community an opportunity to enjoy our artworks while safely outdoors!

A big thank you to all the businesses and houses who supported us by lending us their windows for the fortnight!
