Janine Smith

In her work Janine is exploring the way that memory can be held within the landscape. Through photography and mixed media she records the shapes and patterns she sees around her everyday. The fields, fences, stone dykes, clusters of farm buildings - the old is very evident contrasting with the new in the Orkney landscape. The small intricate details of the the landscape are recorded photographically contrasted with the vastness of the sea and sky. The repetition of the image and these fleeting moments are recorded again and again reinforcing the realisation that place and memory are important to one's sense of identity. The invisible connection between place and personal experience is given space to exist in the traces of an image and the changing shapes of the land.
