Molly Shearer

Molly’s work explores her connection to and place within the Orkney Landscape primarily through textile practices such as the slow, meditative process of hand-weaving. She was originally drawn to weaving through family connections, and as she explored the technique in relation to her own practice Molly found the connection between the maker and the loom particularly interesting.

Primarily concerned with a sense of place and deepening an ever-developing dialogue between her and the environment, she draws inspiration from the environment itself as well as folklore and storytelling.

Recently, Molly has been exploring the parallels between weaving and the landscape—the repetitive process echoing the constant that is the changes of the environment: the passage of time, the changing of the seasons, the equinoxes. With this she aims to create a pause, a moment of reflection and a sense of calm. One which reflects her relationship to the Orkney environment and the meditative nature of weaving.
