Susan Whittingham

Susan’s practice is largely concerned with the phenomenology of everyday things, endeavouring to discover the remarkable in the ordinary; things that are often overlooked by reason of familiarity and habitual seeing.

Susan use digital photography in combination with writing, poetry, sculpture and installation to interpret the trembling energies of a kinetic landscape. Over time her photography has become more intuitive rather than technical in attempting to capture fleeting encounters with natural phenomena. Ambiguity and disorientation are key facets of an ongoing reciprocal dialogue between photography and sculpture that explores her interconnectedness with place. 'Place' in this context not only refers to the Island of Hoy in Orkney, but also to a liminal zone of in-between-ness that she refers to as 'phenomenessence'.
