Jamilla Garrett
I am an artist based in Orkney, graduating from UHI Orkney in 2022 and currently studying remotely with UHI Shetland. I use a multimedia approach, working largely in, drawing, painting, sculpture and textiles. I often use found, second-hand or damaged materials, with the intention of in some way repairing or recreating them. I am largely inspired by figures in history and reimagining their stories through shifting their narrative or through my choice of materials.

Lillian, Ivy and Violet, porcelain. Tear ducts in the mugs cry tea when full, mixing domesticity and grief. They sit on a tablecloth of disassembled teabags that have been sewn together. This gets increasingly fragile the more tea it catches.

Henry, Lillian, Harry, Norman, Ivy and Violet, Textile. Like Lillian, Ivy and Violet, this piece is about the impact of war on family units.

She’s a Catch, Sea pottery, fork (washed up on the beach), Modroc, acrylic paint, seaweed and shells. Based on the Orcadian folktale The Selkie Wife. Exhibited as part of Móti's 'Roots' exhibition, Oct 2022.
